Belgrano (Buenos Aires)

Belgrano is a district in the north of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. The district is 6.8 km ² and has 140,000 inhabitants (as of 2001).

Location

South-east of it lies Palermo, northwest Nuñez. Coghlan, Villa Urquiza, Villa Ortúzar and Colegiales are located southwest of the district.

History

Belgrano was named after Manuel Belgrano, a politician and military, who also designed the Argentine flag. 1820, when Belgrano died, a law was adopted so that the next town founded 'm named after him. This happened in 1855. The settlement grew rapidly and was for a few weeks also the capital of Argentina. The law, which Buenos Aires is to be the future capital, but was coincidentally also adopted in Belgrano. Belgrano was incorporated in 1887 in Buenos Aires, along with Flores.

Subdivision

Belgrano is a residential area of ​​the upper middle class, which is roughly divided into Belgrano R, Belgrano C, central Belgrano and lower Belgrano ( Bajo Belgrano ). The heart is the Avenida Cabildo, which runs from the northwest to the southeast. The line D subway ( Subte ) follows its course. On weekends the road is populated, albeit porteños from other districts come here for shopping.

West of Avenida Crámer is the residential area of Belgrano R with its quiet, tree-lined streets. The houses here are mainly detached houses, often with a swimming pool in the garden, which are inhabited by wealthy Argentines and foreign businessmen.

In Belgrano C can also be found the Barrio Chino (Chinatown) in Buenos Aires. Here you will find many restaurants and grocery stores that target the needs of the Asia -born population.

Also belongs to the district of the Universidad de Belgrano, a private college. Also, you often see people running professionally dogs. Although only a maximum of 10 dogs per exporters are allowed under the law, but some take for a walk up to 20, which contributes significantly to the pollution of the walkways.

The park Barrancas de Belgrano was designed by architect Carlos Thays, who also created other public places in the city.

The Technical School No. 28: " French Republic " was the first specialized on electronics school in Argentina.

In the area of Belgrano also is the football stadium El Monumental, where the River Plate football club is at home and where also plays the Argentine national football team.

German in Belgrano

Middle of the last century, many German immigrants lived in Belgrano. The Pestalozzi school in Belgrano is aligned bilingual and puts an emphasis on the German language. Until the early 1990s there were Belgrano and the Goethe- school with similar orientation.

From Belgrano, the term derives Belgranodeutsch, indicating a mixture of the German language with Spanish words, which is partially still spoken by descendants of German immigrants.
