The Belianske Tatry are a mountain range in the north of Slovakia.

Designation

The mountain is named ( German Zipser Bela ) to Spišská Bela. It bore different names in the past. Older Slovak names are Belanské Tatry, Belanské Hills, Belanské Alpy, Bielske Kvapnikové Alpy, Belanské vápencové Alpy and Ždiarske Tatry. The Zipser Germans called the ridge Belianske, Beler Tatra Mountains or Beler, with the spelling ... BELER was applied (after the Hungarian form). Alternatively, was or is the first part of the name also Belianske or Belianske. In recent decades, White Tatras has often been used, possibly because of the bright rock, but may also give a false translation of the word Belianske from Slovak. The commonly used in the Hungarian and Polish names are Belai - havasok or Tatry Bielskie.

Location and extent

The Belianske Tatry consist of a 15 km long main ridge. Overall, the mountains covers an area of approximately 65 km ². Limited, it is

  • In the northwest of the Valley Podtatranská Brázda,
  • In the north- east from the mountains Spišská Magura ( Zipser Magura )
  • In the east and south-east from the valley of Podtatranská kotlina
  • The south and southwest of the High Tatras.

Over the mountain passes Kopské ( German Large Saddle / Kopp Pass, 1749 m) and Saddleback pod Príslopom ( German morning Röther / Zdjarer Pass, 1077 m) is connected to the High Tatras or the Spišská Magura.

Character

The running in the east-west direction main ridge falls away steeply to the south, whereas branch short, forested at lower altitudes side ridges to the north. In contrast to the High Tatras in the Belianske dominate various limestones. This originated here karst phenomena, in particular caves. The flora is more diverse than in the neighboring mountains.

History

In the 14th century the Belianske Tatry to have been used as grazing land. The numerous caves attracted treasure hunters. From the 17th century ( copper ) was operated on a modest scale mining.

Tourism and conservation

As part of the tourist development of the nearby Tatra Mountains during the 19th century, the Belianske Tatry were known. Reger tourism sat but only after the Second World War. 1949 Mountains became part of the newly founded Tatra National Park ( TANAP ). Several marked trails lead through the area, including over the flat eastern part of the main ridge. In 1978, almost the entire mountain was closed due to the uncontrollable influx of visitors by the National Park Service. Only on the southern slope led along walk- ways. In 1993, a path from the Ždiar over the central saddle Široké saddleback for Kopské was released. Since 1997, the location in the southeast part of the mountain range mountain hut Chata Plesnivec again serves the purposes of tourism.
