Belk, Inc. is a department store chain founded in 1888 with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. In January 2012, Belk operated a total of 303 stores in the southern states of the United States and achieved sales of around 3.7 billion U.S. dollars.

History

The company was founded in 1888 in Monroe, North Carolina by William Henry Belk. First Belk named his company New York racket after his brother Dr. John Belk in the company first they called their common Belk Brothers Company. 20 years after the founding of the two brothers moved the headquarters to the nearby Charlotte and opened a department store in the Trade and Tryon Streets in downtown.

In the 1950s, John and Tom Belk took over, the sons of the company founder William Henry Belk, the management. They continued the expansion of the department store chain, and opened branches in other cities and in malls.

100 years after the founding of the Belk store network already existed for more than 300 department stores in 16 states.

2004 Tim Belk CEO and his brothers Johnny and McKay Belk Belk was also occupied posts in the management. Since then, several competitors such as Proffitt 's, McRae 's and Parisian been adopted and integrated into the company.
