Bell housing

The clutch bell ( also: bell ) is the common, if not professional designation for a component in the vehicle drive train between the engine block and the vehicle transmission. It is the housing of the flywheel and the clutch, in an automatic transmission, it is the housing of the flywheel and the torque converter.

The case got its name because of the bell shape, which results from the contained components.

The clutch housing is bolted to the engine block, its other end is screwed to the gearbox. Not so with Transaxle layout, here one of the two connections is given only on the Transaxlewelle. In compact construction (for example, front-wheel drive with the front engine ) are sometimes clutch housing and the transmission housing, sometimes the differential housing are combined into one component.

Typically, the starter is mounted in the clutch housing and engages the flywheel to start the engine.
