Bellecombe

Bellecombe is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Bellecombe lies at 1200 m above sea level. M., and thus one of the highest towns in the Jura Mountains, 10 km south-southeast of the town of Saint -Claude (air line). The scattered settlement community extends high Jura, in a basin of the Hautes- Combes west of the Valley of Valserine.

The area of ​​12.17 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The area is located exclusively on the plateau of the Hautes- Combes (on average at 1200 m above sea level. M. ). The landscape is undulating and shows natural features such as ridges and troughs oriented southwest-northeast direction according to the strike of the Jura Mountains in the area. The hollows have no surface drainage, as the rain water seeps into the porous limestone substrate. In places that are sealed by clay minerals, there are bogs. The plateau of the Hautes- Combes shows a loose structure of pasture and forest. The eastern boundary is located on the wooded ridge (up to 1280 m above sea level. M. ), which separates the Hautes- Combes from the Valley of Valserine. In the extreme south is on the ridge that rises to the Cret au Merle, 1,380 m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Bellecombe. The area of Bellecombe is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut- Jura.

Bellecombe is a scattered settlement, consisting of groups of farms and individual farms. Neighboring communities of Bellecombe are Les Molunes in the north, the east Lélex, Chézery -Forens in the south and La Pesse and Les Moussières in the West.

History

The plateau to Bellecombe belonged to the monastery of Saint- Claude. Until the late 18th century, most farms were not staffed all year round. Bellecombe does not have its own church.

Population

With 78 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Bellecombe one of the smallest towns in the Jura. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1896 334 persons were still counted ), a slight increase in population was recorded since the early 1990s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Bellecombe was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially livestock and dairy farming, as well as by the forestry village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are no other jobs in the village.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Les Moussières. Further road links exist with Lajoux and Les Bouchoux.
