Bellemagny

Bellemagny is a commune of 192 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Altkirch and thence to Canton Dannemarie. The municipality is one of 33 members of the community association Communauté de communes de la Porte d' Alsace ( CCPA ).

Geography

The community Bellemagny in the field of Burgundian Gate is located in the extreme southwest of the Alsace region, bordering the region of Franche -Comté. In the village of Steinbach flows into the Traubach which drains via the Largue to Ill and thus belongs to the catchment area of ​​the Rhine. Immediately west of Bellemagny runs the Rhone-Rhine watershed.

Neighboring municipalities are Eteimbes and Bretten in the north, Sternberg in the east, in the southeast Guevenatten, Saint -Cosme in the south and Vauthiermont in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Austrian rule Belfort, then until the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 to the county Pfirt. From 1800 to 1870 the village belonged to Arrondissemant Belfort. There was the time in which the Alsace belonged to the German Empire until 1918. During the German occupation in World War II was the place once again part of the municipality of Saint -Cosme. After independence in 1944 Bellemagny was given its own parish.

1851 founded the priest Alois Faller in Bellemagny the Order of the Benedictines of worship. The monastery is the Mother House of the Order. It is a hostel for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela. In addition, the nuns perform a retirement home in the community.
