Belleville Nuclear Power Plant

F1

Active reactors ( gross ):

The nuclear power plant Belleville in Belleville French community in the Centre region in the department of Cher, about 100 kilometers southeast of the city of Orléans on the Loire river consists of two pressurized water reactors.

Key data

The 170 -acre nuclear power plant site is located on a flood-proof, 4.6 meters high platform. The plant employs about 650 people. Operator is the French company Electricité de France (EDF). The two pressurized water reactors have a net power output of 1310 megawatts ( MW) and a gross capacity of 1363 MW. The total capacity is 2726 MW, making it one nuclear power plant to the average in France. Every year, it feeds an average of 19 billion kilowatt hours into the public power grid, thus covering about four percent of the French electricity consumption.

The construction of the first reactor block was started on 1 May 1980 He went on 14 October 1987. Construction of the second reactor block was on 1 August 1980, this went on 6 July 1988. The shutdown of the reactors is planned for the years 2028 and 2029.

Security

In May 2001, a construction-related defect was, as in four other nuclear power plants in France, found that presented the operation of the emergency core cooling systems in question. The emergency cooling system of the nuclear power plant is applied in two phases. Reserve tank supply water with a defect in the primary cooling circuit. However, this is no longer sufficient water in an emergency cooling from water automatically, that has accumulated at the bottom of the reactor building, is fed. Tests in May 2001 showed, however, that this automatic feed of the water was not guaranteed in the cooling circuit, because under certain circumstances the pressure of the heated water can lead to blocking of the water slide.

This disorder of the emergency core cooling system classified by the French nuclear regulator ASN on the International Nuclear Event Scale Rating (INES ) first with the level 1, but later it was classified in Level 2. The operating company EDF built the slide then as to that excess pressure can no longer lead to a blockage.
