Belp

Belp is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Name

The name Belp is not due to a unique origin. 1239 Pelpa was documented, this name is of Celtic origin and means bend, turn, identifies the location which is on a bend of the river Gürbe. Maybe, but the place name comes from the Gallo-Roman Balbia what steep slope means.

Geography

Belp is located at the entrance of the Gürbetal Valley, 10 km away from Bern towards Thun. It has the Aare- meadow landscape with a unique in Switzerland nature reserve. In Belp is the airport Bern -Belp. Belp is despite its proximity to Bern still represents a more rural community

History

Grave findings lead to the conclusion that the area of Belp was inhabited around 1200 BC. First mention of Belp in 1107. Belp The church is first mentioned in 1228 in the Church Directory of the Diocese of Lausanne. At the castle Hohburg, built in 1125, resided the Barons of Belp - Montenach. In 1298 the barons fought on the side opposite the city of Freiburg and Bern were defeated in the battles of Dornbühl and low cheeks. The Barons had to resign after the city of Bern Belp. With the downfall of the old Bern, 1798, and the barony of Belp fell there. 1803 Belp official residence of the former District Seftigen, whose administration was housed from 1810 in Belp castle.
