Belpasso

Belper is a town of the province of Catania in Sicily in Italy with 27 059 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Belper is situated 22 km northwest of Catania on the southern slope of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and industry. The place has connection to the ferrovia circumetnea that Ätnarundbahn, and offers itself as a starting point for trips to Mount Etna.

The neighboring municipalities are Adrano, Bianca Villa, Bronte, Camporotondo Etneo, Castiglione di Sicilia, Catania, Lentini (SR ), Maletto, Nicolosi, Motta Santa Anastasia, Nicolosi Paternò, Ragalna, Ramacca, Randazzo, San Pietro Clarenza, Sant'Alfio and Zafferana Etnea.

History

The Year of foundation is unknown, the city was called in ancient times Malpasso. In the Ätnaausbruch 1669 the city was destroyed and rebuilt further down the Etna as Fenicia Moncada again. In the 1693 earthquake, the city was again destroyed. The town was rebuilt on the same site in the pattern of a chessboard with the current name.

Attractions

The church of Santa Lucia was built by Giovanni Bellia. Other attractions include the Palace and the Palace Bufali Scrofani from the 18th century.

Since 1987 is awarded in Belper Nino Martoglio International Book Award, a literary prize for Sicilian writer. So far, among others, Giuseppe Bonaviri (1989 ), Gesualdo Bufalino (1990 ), Andrea Camilleri (1998) and Vincenzo Consolo (1999) were excellent.
