Belur Math

Belur Math ( Bengali: বেলুড়মঠ beluṛmaṭh, ) is a Hindu monastery (Math ) in the north Haoras, a neighboring city of Kolkata. It was established in 1899 as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Vivekananda two years earlier and is also the location of the monastic order Ramakrishna Math

The complex consists of a large prayer hall ( main temple ) with Ramakrishna statue whose appearance combines elements of a church as well as a mosque and its completely empty interior is used by many visitors to meditation purposes, as well as numerous other small temples and shrines. On the grounds of Belur Math are located behind the main temple of the administration building of the local organizations, as well as the residences of the monks.

There is a permanent ferry service from Belur Math to slightly up-river on the other side of the swing arm Hugli Dakshineshwar, Kali Temple and Ramakrishna's residence.
