Bemmel

Bemmel is a district of the municipality Lingewaard in the Dutch province of Gelderland. According to the statistics from January 1, 2006, the district had 12,189 residents.

By 2001 Bemmel was a separate municipality, which then merged with Huissen and Gendt. Bemmel lies between the larger cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen, and is bounded by the rivers Rhine and Waal and Linge. The nearest trunk road is the A15.

The oldest building in Bemmel is a reformed church, which was built in the 12th century and was originally dedicated to St. Donatus. In the center of the newly established De Kinkel castle is located. This moated castle from the 13th century was to bring together the communities of the City Hall Bemmel, now a part of the local government is housed there. In the years between 1990 and 2006 the new development areas classified Rome, Klaverkamp and Essenpas emerged.

As a secondary school in the village is a part of the Overbetuwe College, in addition there are primary schools Donatushof De, De Regenboog, De Maria School, De Pius X and De Borgwal.

In place annually is a music festival and a pony market is held on the stud Buitenzorg.

History

The The XXX. British Corps conquered Bemmel as part of Operation Market Garden on 24 September 1944.
