Ben Avon is a borough in Allegheny County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is located on the Ohio River. In 2010, Ben Avon had 1,781 inhabitants. The place belongs to the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area.
The name Ben Avon comes from the Scottish word meaning " mountain of water "
Geography
Ben Avon is located at 40 ° 30 'N, 80 ° 5' W40.5075 - 80.082222222222 ( 40.507418, -80.082162 ) and is situated on the northern banks of the Ohio River, at an altitude of 258 m. To the west is bordered Ben Avon at Emsworth, east of Avalon. On the ridge above Ben Avon Ben Avon Heights is located in the north. The Pennsylvania State Route 65 leads as 65th Infantry Division Memomrial Highway near the shore by Ben Avon and connects the village with about ten kilometers from Pittsburgh.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Ben Avon has a total area of 1.2 km ², of which 1.0 km ² of land and 0.2 km ² ( = 14.89% ) in the aquatic environment.
History
Ben Avon was incorporated in January 1891 as Borough from the Kilbuck Township out.
Like many early suburbs of Pittsburgh, it was originally connected to the city by a railway line, the Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne Railroad. The station was built, where in 1870 a merchant from Allegneny built a summer house, which is now known as Arthur - Johnson House building. The railway line was closed down in 1950.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were Ben Avon 1917 people. The population density was 1850.4 people per km ². There were 825 housing units at an average 796.3 per km ². The population consisted of Ben Avon 95.93 % White, 2.45 % African American, 0.37 % Native American, 0.26 % Asian, 0 % Pacific Islander, 0.05 % reported from other races and 0.94 % from two or more races. 0.47 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents Ben Avon distributed to 784 households out of which 32.0% were living in children under 18 years. 51.9 % married couples living together, 11.6 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6 % were non-families. 28.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.4 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size is 3.05.
The population was spread out with 25.3 % under the, 5.2 % 18 -24- year-old, 33.9 % 25 -44- year-old, 23.7% 45-64 year olds and 11.9 % under the age of 65 years or more. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women, 83.1 men.
