Ben Bot

Bernard " Ben" Rudolf Bot ( born November 21, 1937 in Batavia ) is a Dutch politician and member of the CDA ( Christian Democratisch Appèl ). Bot was between 2003 and 2007 foreign minister of his country in the government of Jan Peter Balkenende.

Life

Ben Bot studied law at the University of Leiden, The Hague Academy of International Law and Harvard Law School in Cambridge. In 1968 he earned his doctorate at the University of Leiden.

From 1963 he worked at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1964 to 1970 he worked in the Representation of the Netherlands in the European Union until 1976 he worked in the embassies in Buenos Aires and East Berlin. From 1986 to 1989 he was ambassador to Turkey. After that, he was General Secretary of the Foreign Ministry. 1992 Permanent until retirement on January 1, 2003 Representative of the Netherlands to the European Union.

On 3 September 2003 he became Foreign Minister in the second Balkenende government. On 22 February 2007, he was replaced by Maxime Verhagen as Foreign Minister.
