Ben Gascoigne

Sidney Charles Bartholemew Gascoigne ( born November 11, 1915 in Napier, New Zealand, † March 25, 2010 in Canberra) was an Australian astronomer.

He received in 1937 a Master of Science at the University of Auckland in 1941 a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Bristol. From 1964 to 1980 he was a professor at the Australian National University in Canberra, since 1966 a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. His creations include aspheric correctors for reflecting telescopes that extend their field of view, such as those used in the Irenee du Pont and Swope telescopes at Las Campanas Henrietta Observatory.

He was married to the artist Rosalie Gascoigne, and had three children.
