Ben Steinberg

Ben ( jamin ) Steinberg ( born January 22, 1930 in Winnipeg ) is a Canadian composer, conductor, organist and music teacher.

Steinberg sang in his childhood in his father, the cantor Alexander Steinberg, led Syagogenchor and worked already twelve years old as a choral conductor. He studied from 1948 to 1951 at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto composition with John Weinzweig, Samuel Dolin at the piano and singing with Weldon Kilburn. After he had given in the 1950s music lessons in schools in the Toronto area, he studied music education at the University of Toronto and from 1961 to 1964, the Music Department of the Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute and up to 1986 by the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute. In addition, he was from 1950 to 1960 director of the music school and until 1969 the Music Director of Holy Blossom Temple and in 1970 Musical Director of Temple Sinai. From 1978 to 1981 he was Composer in Residence of the city of Jerusalem.

In addition to religious music (including six sacred services) and thirteen cantatas Steinberg also composed instrumental works. He was awarded the 1983 Kavod Honour Award from the Cantor 's Assembly and the Bach Prize of the American Harp Society (for his Suite for Flute, Viola and Harp, commissioned for Suzanne Shulman ). He composed works for Paul Brodie (Suite Sephardi, 1980), the Chamber Players of Toronto (Suite for String Orchestra, 1983), and Lawrence Cherney ( Invocations, 1990) and has received numerous commissions from synagogues and churches in the USA. He has published a textbook for youth choirs (Together Do They Sing, 1961) and is co-author of the publication One People, One Voice of the National Jewish Welfare Board. 1998 awarded him the New York Hebrew Union College / Jewish Institute of Religion an honorary doctorate. He was awarded the Eisendrath Bearer of Light Award of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, 2001, 2004, he received an award for his life's work of the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism.
