Benbecula

Benbecula ( Scottish Gaelic: Beinn na Faoghla ) is an island of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland.

Geography

Benbecula is 82 km ² in size and is located between the islands of North Uist and South Uist. The three islands are among the Uists, a group of islands in the Outer Hebrides. Benbecula is linked by causeways ( causeways ) to North Uist and South Uist.

The west of the island is dominated by agricultural land, while in the east moorland dominates with lakes and deep bays.

In the year 2011 1.303 people lived on Benbecula. The highest point is 124 meters high Ruaval, the second highest of the 54 m high Stiaraval.

Benbeculas main town and administrative center of the Uists is the village Balivanich ( Scottish Gaelic: Baile a ' Mhanaich ) is located in the northwest of the island, near which the Benbecula Airport ( IATA code BEB). Other villages Lionacleit belongs to the Secondary School for the Uists and a branch of Lewis Castle College.

Policy

Benbecula is part of the administrative region of Western Isles.

Traffic

There is no direct ferry from Benbecula to the Scottish mainland, but Caledonian MacBrayne operates a regular ferry service between the mainland and neighboring islands Benbeculas North Uist and South Uist.

Furthermore scheduled flights between Glasgow and Inverness and Benbecula Airport are made via Stornoway, situated on the Lewis, by far the largest town in the Outer Hebrides.
