Benelli Sei

The Benelli 750 Be was the first six-cylinder motorcycle manufactured in series. "Be " is the Italian word for the number six. The presentation took place in October 1972, production began in 1974, the sales to Germany started in 1975.

The entrepreneur Alejandro de Tomaso had bought Benelli in 1971 and promoted the development of the Be decisive. With designers from the former Benelli racing department (headed Pierpalo Prampolini ) the "Be " was developed. The 1973 model available Benelli 500 Quattro with four-cylinder engine, a copy of the engine of the Honda CB 500 Four, has been expanded by adding two cylinders. There 3,200 copies were built, of which about 300 were sold in Germany. Cultivated specimens are traded on the then price of DM 10,000 today ( 2013).

Technical information

The cross in the double-loop tubular frame built-in 620 mm wide engine had a single overhead camshaft with chain drive. With this construction, the engine was narrower than a BMW boxer engine. The mixture was prepared by three 26 mm Dell'Orto carburettors, which supplied two adjacent cylinders via bifurcated intake manifolds. The power was 63 hp at 8,500 min-1, the maximum torque of 55.9 Nm is reached at 4,000 min-1. Originally 29 mm carburetor passages were provided, which would have allowed power 75 hp, but could be so that the German emission regulations do not comply. With the Model 1977, 24 mm carburetors were used, which are now offered an output of 58 hp at 8,500 min-1. As well as many other motorcycle models - - In other countries, Be was with slightly different specifications offered.

The bike had a 6-in -6 exhaust system; left and right three exhaust pipes were performed. The front fork was from Marzocchi, the front Brembo double disk brake had a disc diameter of 280 mm, which was later enlarged to 300 mm, the Grimeca rear drum brake had 200 mm drum diameter.

The fuel tank took 22 liters, the consumption ( according to CUNA ) was 7.9 liters per 100 km. Honda and Kawasaki subsequently developed also six-cylinder motorcycles, the Honda CBX and the Kawasaki Z 1300. These motorcycles could find few buyers because six-cylinder motorcycles were found to be too heavy, unwieldy and too expensive to purchase and maintain.

Benelli 900 Sei

The successor model with 906 cm ³ larger displacement and an output of 80 hp at 8,300 min -1 was built from 1978 to 1989. The performance figures were higher with this powerful engine: 193 km / h top speed, acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 4.6 seconds. The design of the brake system was the Moto Guzzi Le Mans similar and was characterized by an integral brake. In this design, when you press the foot brake and a disc of the front wheel is mitgebremst simultaneously. In the second and third series, the motorcycle with a cockpit fairing was fitted.
