Benjamin Contee

Benjamin Contee (* 1755 in Nottingham, Prince George's County, Maryland, † November 30, 1815 in Charles County, Maryland ) was an American politician. Between 1789 and 1791 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Benjamin Contee was the uncle of Alexander Contee Hanson (1786-1819), who represented the state of Maryland in both chambers of Congress. He was also a great-uncle of Congressman Thomas Contee Worthington ( 1782-1847 ). Contee attended private schools. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, he joined the movement and became an officer in the Continental Army. He brought it up to the captain of a unit from Maryland. After the war he embarked on a political career. Between 1785 and 1787 he sat in the House of Representatives from Maryland: in 1788 he was a member of the Continental Congress. Politically, he was in opposition to the future President George Washington ( Anti- Administration Group ).

In the congressional elections of 1789 Contee was selected in the third electoral district of Maryland in the time which meets even in New York U.S. House of Representatives, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1789. Since he resigned in 1790 to further candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1791.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Contee toured several European countries. He began the study of theology, which he continued after his return to the United States. In 1803 he was ordained to the clergy of the Episcopal Church. After that, he became a pastor in Port Tobacco Village in Charles County. He also served as Chief Judge of the guardianship court for orphans in this district. Benjamin Contee died on 30 November 1815.
