Benjamin E. Grey

Benjamin Edwards Grey ( * in Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky; † in Selma, Alabama ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1855 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Benjamin Grey was a grandson of Benjamin Edwards (1753-1829), who represented 1793-1795 the State of Maryland in Congress. Both his birth and his date of death are unknown. He enjoyed a good basic education. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to practice in this profession in Hopkinsville. At the same time he embarked on a political career.

Grey was a member of the Whig party. In 1838 and 1839 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Kentucky; 1847 to 1851 he was a member of the State Senate. At times, he was president of this chamber and acting Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky. In the congressional elections of 1850 Grey was in the second electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James Leeper Johnson on March 4, 1851. After a re-election in 1852 he was able to complete up to March 3, 1855 two terms in Congress, which were characterized by tensions in the run-up to the Civil War.
