Benjamin F. White (Montana politician)

Benjamin Franklin White ( born December 3, 1833 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, † December 4, 1920 in Dillon, Montana ) is an American politician ( Republican). He was the last governor of Montana Territory in 1889.

Curriculum vitae

White was elected in 1882 in the parliament of the Montana Territory. There he remained until 1883. In 1889 he was appointed by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison as the successor of Preston Leslie for the twelfth and last territorial governor of Montana. In his short time until November 8, 1889, the day on which Montana was admitted as a new U.S. state in the Union, where the preparations of this accession a Constitution were taken, developed and held its first elections.

With the inauguration of the first regular Governor Joseph Toole ended White's reign. Between 1902 and 1904 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Montana; 1904 to 1908 he sat in the state Senate. After that, he was until 1909 still vice governor of his state.
