Benjamin Howard (Missouri)

Benjamin Howard ( * 1760 in Lexington, Virginia; † September 18, 1814 in St. Louis, Missouri ) was a U.S. Representative ( Democratic- Republican), and territorial governor in Louisiana Territory.

Early years and career

Born in present-day Kentucky Howard attended until 1797, the William and Mary College. After studying law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work as a lawyer in Lexington. In 1800 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Kentucky. Between 4 March 1807 and 10 April 1810, he represented his country in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the Louisiana Territory and the service of the Army

In 1810 he was appointed governor of the Louisiana Territory, which was in 1812 renamed the Missouri Territory. After the outbreak of the war of 1812 Howard resigned to join the army. There he received the rank of brigadier general. He was involved in Illinois in battles with hostile Indians. On the way back to St. Louis diseased Howard. At the same illness he died in September 1814 in St. Louis.
