Benjamin Howland

Benjamin Howland ( born July 27, 1755 in Tiverton, Rhode Iceland, † May 1, 1821 ibid ) was an American politician of the Democratic-Republican Party, who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

After attending the Community School, Benjamin Howland operated initially in agriculture, before he entered the public service. He officiated in 1801 as a tax collector ( collector of taxes ), the following year as an auditor ( auditor Town ) of Tiverton and 1805 then as Chairman of the Municipal Assembly ( Town moderator ).

As a U.S. Senator Samuel John Potter died on October 14, 1804 in office, Howland was elected to succeed him in Congress. He took his seat in the Senate from the 29th of October of the same year; the term of office ended on 3 March 1809. following year, he was then once more politically active as a delegate in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland, before he served in the state militia during the British -American War as a general. In 1821, he died in his hometown of Tiverton and was buried in the family cemetery.
