Benjamin Schmolck

Benjamin Schmolck ( Schmolke ) ( born December 21, 1672 in the Duchy of Legnica Brauchitschdorf, † February 12, 1737 in Schweidnitz ) was a German poet of the Baroque church songs.

Life

The son of Pastor Martin Schmolck attended high school in Legnica and 1693 enrolled at the Faculty of Theology in Leipzig. After graduating in 1697, he helped his father in Brauchitschdorf until he was appointed in 1702 as the deacon at the Church of Peace Schweidnitzer. Here he spent the rest of his life, from 1714 as a senior pastor and court preacher. At the same time he taught at the mercy of school, where Johann Christian Günther was one of his students. He stood close to the flow of pietism.

Schmolck wrote a total of 1183 songs, some of which are still sung today, eg "I'm on the beautiful gate" (EC 166). His devotional and prayer books are widely used and have been launched over again.
