Benjamin Weger

Benjamin Weger ( born October 5, 1989 in Geschinen ) is a Swiss biathlete.

Career

Benjamin Weger is a student and lives in Geschinen. The coached by Markus Segessenmann Athlete of the SC Goms valley began in 2006 with the biathlon. A year later, he moved on to the Swiss national squad. Towards the end of the season 2005/ 06 he debuted internationally as part of the European Junior Cup. In Gurnigel he ran in his fourth race, a mass start for the first time in the top ten. In 2007 he took part in Martell at the Junior World Championships. In individual Weger ran on the 15th, in the sprint on the 13th and in the pursuit to eleventh place. In 2008 he finished seventh in singles, fourth in the sprint and fifth persecution in Ruhpolding. Between the two World Junior Championships, he finished the season in multiple places in the top ten in the Junior European Cup. The European Junior Championships 2008 in Nové Město na Moravě was satisfactory for the young Swiss. Worst result was the ninth place in the individual, sprint, he won the bronze medal in the pursuit and missed another. Towards the end of the season he won in Cesana San Sicario after a second place in the sprint Pursuit of the European Junior Cup. In the summer Weger joined the junior competitions at the Summer Biathlon World Championships 2008 in Haute Maurienne and won silver in the sprint behind Martin Fourcade, in pursuit, he had only beaten Jakov Fak.

Since the 2008/ 09 season Weger will not start with the juniors. His debut in the seniors he gave in Obertilliach within the IBU Cups. Already in his first race, a single, missed the Swiss eleventh barely a top ten placement. In Oberhof, he debuted at the beginning of the year 2009 at the Biathlon World Cup. In the 2010/11 season Weger succeeded on 16 December 2010 with second place in the individual Pokljuka his best result so far. It was also the best result of a Swiss biathlete.

To start off in the Biathlon World Cup 2011/2012 Weger scored in Östersund with ranks 13 in the sprint and seven in pursuit of his best ever start to the season. In Hochfilzen he rose again with two third place finishes in the sprint and pursuit. He is the first Swiss in this sport, which was able to win more than a podium finish in his career.

In November 2012 Weger received the Upper Valais Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year, a month later the distinction of being young Swiss Sportsman of the Year.

After streaky start to the Biathlon World Cup 2012/2013 Weger reached early January 2013 in the sprint in Oberhof with ninth his first top ten finish of the season. In the subsequent persecution, he rose by a further four positions. In both races he allowed himself only one shooting error.
