Benken

Benken is a municipality in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen in the constituency of See-Gaster. It is located about 5 km south-east of Lake Zurich.

Geography

Benken is the district capital of Gaasterland. In the casting, southwest of the village center, change the Linthkanal and the parallel power lines their direction. The mountain of Benken is the Benkner Büchel.

History

741 Babinchova a monastery was first mentioned. The exact location of this monastery is not known.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul was created 1792-95 and extended in 1917-18. The interior is New Baroque comes from Albert Rimli. The vaults images created August Müller 1919.

On the Benkner Büchel is the nationally known pilgrimage town of Maria Bildstein, which dates back to the year 1519. The numerous chapels and caves dating from the 19th century form a unique ensemble in the northern Alpine region. Today's pilgrimage church dates from 1966 and has valuable items of equipment.

Energy

The power is distributed from the electricity supply Benken ( EVB ). Their suppliers are the St. Gallo- Appenzell power plants ( SAK ) and Axpo AG. Axpo and enjoy the EWZ transmission rights for higher voltage levels. Since 1961 is on the left channel of the Linth the substation Benken. There was begun to divert electrical power from the then 220 - kV line Sils- Fällanden Samstagern. In 1994, the old system was replaced by a new, remotely operated 380 kV station. There, next to the 220 -kV offshoot after Samstagern begins the 380 - kV line Benken - Mettlenstrasse.

Infrastructure

Extra Urban Benken is rich in agricultural zones. The " Benknerstrasse " called main road connecting the village to the rich castle and cold Brunn.
