Benning W. Jenness

Benning Wentworth Jenness (* July 14, 1806 in Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, † November 16, 1879 in Cleveland, Ohio ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate.

After attending Bradford Academy, a private school in Massachusetts, suggested Benning Jenness a commercial career. From 1826 to 1856 he was there working in Strafford. Parallel to this, he practiced at the local level from a number of offices; he belonged to the House of Representatives from New Hampshire for some time.

From 1841 to 1845 Jenness served as restructuring judge in Strafford County. On 1 December 1845 he was appointed as acting successor of Senator Levi Woodbury, who had followed an appeal to the Supreme Court. He exercised his office until June 13, 1846, before he handed the mandate to the elected official successor to Joseph Cilley. Jenness tried in the same year by the election to the U.S. House of Representatives, but failed.

After that, he was only sporadically active in politics. In 1850 he took part in the Constitutional Convention of New Hampshire; in 1861 he was nominated as governor of the state, but refused the nomination. Jenness then moved to Ohio, where he worked in the timber trade and the banking industry.
