Benno Landsberger

Benno Landsberger (* April 21, 1890 in Friedek, Austrian Silesia, † April 26, 1968 in Chicago) was one of the most important German Assyriologists.

Life

Landsberger studied in Leipzig since 1908 Oriental, his teachers were August Fischer ( Arabic ) and Heinrich rooms ( Assyriology ). In 1913 he received his doctorate in Leipzig. 1914 joined Landsberger in the Austrian army. He served on the Eastern Front, was wounded in 1916 and awarded the Golden Cross of Merit. After the war, Landsberger habilitated in 1920 in Leipzig and in 1926 was appointed extraordinary professor. In 1928 he was appointed as the successor to Peter Jensen's a tenured professor at Marburg, but in 1929 he returned as the successor of Henry rooms back to Leipzig. Besides Landsberger worked in Leipzig also Friedrich -Wilhelm Weissbach. In the time leading Orientalist Institute studied, among others, Adam Falkenstein, Hans Gustav Guterbock, Fritz Rudolf Kraus and Wolfram von Soden. Guterbock and Kraus also came into exile in Turkey.

Dismissed after the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service in 1935, took Landsberger up an appointment at the University of Ankara, where at the instigation of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a new Faculty of Arts was built with historical focus. In 1948 he was appointed professor at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, where he worked until 1955. During this time he became an American citizen.
