Benzbromarone is a uricosuric and is used for the treatment of hyperuricemia, gout and symptom-free intervals of the chronic gout.
Benzbromarone inhibits tubular reabsorption of uric acid. This becomes increasingly excreted, and then the concentration of uric acid in the blood decreases. It is often used in combination with allopurinol, which, however, no significant advantages over monotherapy brings, because at the same time, is excreted increasingly, the active metabolite of allopurinol, oxypurinol.
Side effects can be eliminated by uricosuric agents in the kidneys and the urinary urate.
To support the long-term therapy, a low purine diet and weight reduction as well as avoiding alcohol is recommended.
