Benzie County, Michigan

Benzie County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Beulah.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the west by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 2226 square kilometers, of which 1394 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Leelanau County, Grand Traverse County and Manistee County.

History

Benzie County was formed in 1863 from parts of Leelanau County. It was named after a small river in the area, the former French rulers had called the Riviere Aux Bec- Scies.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Benzie County 15,998 people in 6,500 households and 4,595 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.39 percent White, 0.28 percent Black or African American, 1.59 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.39 percent from other races groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.46 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,500 households out of which 28.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent of all households and 10.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.86.

23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.2 percent 18 to 24 years 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 17.5 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.4 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 37,350, and the median income for a family $ 42,716. Males had a median income of $ 30,218, women $ 21,730. The per capita income was $ 18,524. 4.7 percent of families and 7.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
