Benzonitrile is a colorless, flammable liquid that smells like bitter almonds.

The molecule consists of a six- membered aromatic ring to which a nitrile group is bonded. It is used as a chemical feedstock for syntheses or very rarely as a solvent.

Use

Catalytic hydrogenation (reduction) of benzonitrile benzylamine produced. Added to benzonitrile but with strong aqueous acids or bases, it is hydrolyzed to benzoic acid and ammonia on benzamide.

Safety

When burning blue acidic gases may be generated.
