Berca Mud Volcanoes
The mud volcanoes of Berca (Romanian: Vulcanii Noroiosi ) are a geological and botanical reserve in the Berca commune in the Buzău county. In 1924 the area was declared a size of 30 km ² nature reserve.
Description
The main attraction of the protected area are mud volcanoes, which are a few meters high. It is cold volcanism. The volcanoes are caused by gases that rise from a depth of approximately 3,000 m by clay and water-containing layers. On the surface dries the mud, forming structures that resemble a volcano.
As the mud is salt and sulphurous, creates a hostile environment vegetation, but in which have settled here some rare salt-resistant plant species.
