Berdyansk

Berdyansk (Ukrainian Бердянськ; Russian Бердянск ) is a city in Ukraine with some 115,000 inhabitants ( 2013). The city is the center of the eponymous Rajons south of the Zaporizhia Oblast on the Azov Sea.

Geography

The city is located on the highway, on the Melitopol 120 km to the west can be reached. The Oblastzentrum Zaporozhye is situated 200 km north- west of the city.

The municipality is divided in addition to the city proper or in the villages Nowowassyliwka ( Нововасилівка ) and Rosa ( Роза ) and the settlement Schowkowe ( Шовкове ).

History

In 1827 the city was founded under the name Berdy. 1835 and received its charter and was renamed in 1841 in Berdyansk. Between 1939 and 1958 the city was named after the Ossipenko born there aviatrix Polina Denissowna Ossipenko. Between 7 October 1941 and 17 September 1943, the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht. During this time, Berdyansk Berdyansk was the capital of the district within the Reich Commissariat Ukraine.
