Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn! BWV 132

Prepare the way, prepare the web! ( BWV 132) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in 1715 in Weimar for the 4th Advent, 22 December 1715.

History and words

Bach wrote the cantata as concertmaster at the court of Johann Ernst of Saxe -Weimar for the 4th Advent, and led them on 22 December 1715 in the castle church for the first time on. The prescribed readings were Phil 4:4-7 and Jn 1.19 to 28 LUT LUT, the testimony of John the Baptist. The cantata text was written by the court poet Salomon Franck and published 1715 in Protestant devotional Opffer. Franck finished the cantata with the fifth verse of Elizabeth Cruciger Choral Lord Christ, the agree -god son. In the opening chorus Franck, as well as the Gospel refers to Isaiah, Prepare ye the Lord the way. The poet also takes account of baptism and speaks the individual Christian as a member of Christ.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is like other cantatas from Weimar small staffed with four soloists, soprano, alto, tenor and bass, two oboes, two violins, viola and basso continuo. A four-part choir, if at all, only required in the final chorale. The music of the hymn is lost. Music

In the bass aria the question of John is Who are you? Jesus placed in the mouth, who puts the listener.

The expressive alto recitative is accompanied by the strings. A solo violin dominates the following aria, perhaps inspired by the words " Christ gave to the new garment of purple, and white silk ."
