Berengar I of Neustria

Berengar (* 836, † after 879 ) was around 860 Count in Hesse and then 876-879 Gaugraf in the Saxon Hessengau. He was the youngest of four sons of Count Gebhard in Lahngau and thus a member of the House of Conradines. His mother was a name unknown sister of the powerful Margrave Ernst ( † 865) in the Bavarian and Bohemian Nordgau Mark. His brothers were Udo ( Count in Lahngau ), Waldo ( Abbot of Schwarzach the Upper Rhine and of St. Maximin in Trier ) and Berthold ( 869-883 Archbishop of Trier).

Life

Berengar is first attested in a document, as he gave the peace treaty between Louis the German, Lothar II and Charles the Bald co-signed as a witness in the monastery of St. Castor in Koblenz on June 7, 860. At that time, he probably held already Graf rights in Hesse; However, it is not known where these layers.

Already 861 he retired, together with his brothers and Udo Waldo and her uncle Ernst, the displeasure of Louis the Germans. The reason for this is not clear. While some historians have argued that the four had been involved in the intrigues of Carloman against his father Louis (probably because they were due to Karl 's marriage with another daughter Ernst's related by marriage to him), so others think unlikely as Karl 's rebellion is expressed in the following year. It is therefore assumed that the break between Ernst and his nephew was due more to Ludwig's aggressive policy towards the West with King Louis, which caused severe loyalty conflicts in almost all Frankish noble families of the time.

Anyway, this led to a summons for breach of trust to the Reichstag in April 861 in Regensburg. There, the defendants were convicted and lost all their offices and fiefs. Berengar and his brothers initially sought refuge with her relatives, the Count Adalhard, Senschall in the middle kingdom of Lothar II When Ludwig and Lothar II is reconciled shortly thereafter, they fled with Adalhard to Charles the Bald ( his wife Irmentrud a niece Adalhards and possibly a sister of Berengar's father Gebhard was ). Karl they compensated for their losses, and Adalhard was entrusted with the education of Charlemagne's son Louis. 865 to Berengar and his brother Udo involved in the run of Adalhard defense of his territory against the Normans, without being able to prevent, however, 20 -day looting of St. Denis. Because of this alleged failure deprived them Karl them all previously transmitted by him offices and dignities.

Progeny

Not backed up, but widely believed is that Oda, wife of the East Frankish king and Holy Roman Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia, a daughter of Berengar was.
