Berentzwiller

Berentzwiller ( German " Berenzweiler " ) is a commune with 327 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Vallée de dog Bach.

Geography

Berentzwiller is the Sundgau, between Altkirch and Basel. Through the municipal area flows the valley brook, a tributary of the River Ill.

Neighboring communities of Berentzwiller are Jettingen the west and north, Helfrantzkirch in the northeast, Ranspach -le- Bas in the east, in the southeast Knœringue, Muespach in the south and Steinsoultz in the southwest.

History

Berentzwiller belonged until 1324 to Seigneurie Altkirch (county Pfirt ). Then it came by marriage into the possession of the Habsburg dynasty, from 1648 on, it was by the Peace of Westphalia in 1871 to France. From 1871 to 1919 there was one, as the outcome of the Franco-German War ( 1870-1871 ) to Germany, then back to France ( as the outcome of the First World War ( 1914-1918) ).

The first mention of a church Saint- Imier, which was dedicated to Saint Himerius, 1276 took place. 1632 the building was in poor condition. However, a new nave was built only in 1789. The old cemetery was located south of the church. It contained 1768 an ossuary, which was probably destroyed in 1789 during the construction of the new nave. 1839, the choir, the sacristy and the church tower was renewed. In 1950 the building was renovated. In the church there are several paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as two Holy Statutes from the 15th or 16th century.

The rectory was built in 1764-1766. 1846 building material was used from the former school and out of the barn of the parsonage, to renovate the rectory. The former school in 1888, which stood behind the parish house, converted into a barn. It burned down in 1908. In 1937, the rectory was restored.

The new school was built in 1846. Today it serves as Mairie (, mayor ').

Economy

The main economic activities are agriculture and breeding of domestic cattle and hogs.
