Berezhany

Berezhany (Ukrainian Бережани; Бережаны Russian, Polish Brzezany, German rarely Breschan Armenian Բերեժան ) is a city in the Ternopil Oblast in Ukraine, about 100 km from Lviv ( Lviv ) and 50 km from Ternopil away. The city is the center of Rajons same name, has about 17,000 inhabitants and is located about 280 m above sea level.

History

The first written mention of the village dates from 1374 as a place of Russia. From the 14th to the 18th century Berezhany belonged to Poland. The city right under Magdeburg Law was the settlement awarded on 19 March 1530 by King Sigismund I..

The location on the way from Lviv to Trembowla had a positive impact on the development of the place. However, this requires also a concern of others, so that in 1534 Mikolaj Synjawsky began the construction of a castle, which was completed in 1554. This castle could withstand all attacks until 1648. End of the 17th century, there were nearly 8,000 inhabitants. From the first partition of Poland ( 1772) Berezhany belonged until 1918 to the crown land Galicia of the Austria -Hungarian Habsburg Empire. 1919-1939 it belonged again to Poland and was in 1921 in the province Tarnopol.
