Bergeijk

( Listen? / I ) bergeijk or Bergeyk is a municipality in the Netherlands, North Brabant province. It has 18.190 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Their total area is 103.23 km ². The municipality includes the villages Bergeijk or Bergeyk, Luyksgestel, Riethoven and Westerhoven.

The community is located between Eindhoven and Lommel (Belgium ).

Agriculture and tourism are the main sources of income. Even commuters live in Bergeijk who work in the northern neighboring municipality of Eindhoven.

History

Luyksgestel belonged before the French Revolution to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and came in 1816 to the Netherlands. The other places, always farming villages, shared the fate of North Brabant, so that Catholics 1648-1793 were not allowed to freely exercise their religion: They went abroad ( Luyksgestel ) to the fair. In the 18th and 19th centuries earned many inhabitants of these villages as a peddler with copper pots and wigs make a living. In the local dialect they were called Teuten.

Westerhoven has for some years a part of the community Bergeijk. Every year many thousands of tourists from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and many other countries the way to Westerhoven because of the bungalow park De Kempervennen Center Parcs. Here you can eat in many restaurants, swim in a large subtropical swimming pool, year-round drive over on real snow skiing and water skiing on the great lakes. Westerhoven already in de Prehistorie was a popular place of settlement. Hunters settled on the banks of the rivers and Keersop Beekloop. De Heuvel, connecting to the neighboring village Riethoven, was created in the Roman period. Excavations at the former Haverhof Frankish pottery were found. The Valentinuskapelle on Loverensedijk was built after the Second World War as a memorial chapel on medieval remains of a chapel. In the situated next to the chapel fountain, the water level is always higher than the groundwater. The water has a healing effect on skin diseases is attributed. Every year on 14 February ( Valentinusdag ) takes place in the evening on a pilgrimage from St. Servatius church to the chapel.
