The Bergenien species were formerly classified in the genus Saxifrage ( Saxifraga ), section Saxifraga sect. Megasea classified. The genus name Bergenia in 1794 by Conrad Moench in Methodus Plantas Horti Botanici et Agri Marburgensis: , p 664 first published a staminum situ describendi. Type species is bifolia Bergenia Moench, now a synonym of Bergenia crassifolia (L.) Fritsch. The scientific genus name Bergenia honors the German physician and botanist Karl August von Bergen.

The genus Bergenia include, depending on taxonomic concept between seven and twelve species:

  • Kashmir Bergenia ( Bergenia ciliata ( Haw. ) Sternb. ): The home of the temperate regions of the Himalayas from Kashmir to Bhutan, Assam and eastern Afghanistan.
  • Nodding Pincushion Bergenia or Altai Heart Leaf Bergenia ( Bergenia cordifolia ( Haw. ) Sternb. ): The home is Russia.
  • Dick leaf Bergenia ( Bergenia crassifolia (L.) Fritsch ): Your home is Xinjiang, northern Korea, the northern Mongolia and Russia.
  • Bergenia emeiensis CYWu ex JTPan: Your varieties are found at altitudes 1600-4200 meters only in the central and western Sichuan.
  • Bergenia pacumbis ( D.Don ) CYWu & JTPan: Your home is the southern Xizang, western Yunnan, Afghanistan, Bhutan, northeastern India, Kashmir, Nepal, Pakistan and Sikkim.

Use

As a hardy ground cover, rock garden plants or ornamental shrubs Bergenien varieties are planted in parks and gardens. As easily several types interbreed, one finds as ornamental hybrids, such as:

  • Bergenia ciliata × crassifolia
  • Bergenia cordifolia × crassifolia
  • Bergenia × schmidtii ( usually ) Silva Tar
  • Bergenia x spathulata.

In addition, there are some species Bergenia cordifolia especially, many created by breeding varieties.

Others

  • In English the Bergenien are often called Pigsqueak ( = Schweinequiek ). This curious name derives from the sound made when rubbing fresh leaves.
  • Bergenien like to be haunted by Dickmaulrüsslern. The leaves are then eaten and bulged from the edge.
