Geographical location

The municipality is bordered to the north by Ohlsbach, on the east by the city of Gengenbach, on the southwest by Hohberg and to the northwest by the circle city of Offenburg.

History

Berghaupten was first documented in 1277. In the following centuries the history of the place was closely associated with the Lords of Hohengeroldseck until the family became extinct in 1634. There followed a period of disputes between Austria and the Bishop of Strasbourg. In 1697 the village was sold to the Barons of Schley.

South of the town was once the castle today Outbound Berghaupten, while in the place was a noble country house, whose owner changed frequently and was developed by the Barons of Schleiß the moated castle already to the acquisition of the place.
