The Bergisch Gladbach station is a terminal station and the traffic control center of the city of Bergisch Gladbach in North Rhine -Westphalia. Until 1965, he was named Mountain. Gladbach city center. Since 1 June 1975 he is the end point of the coming from Cologne / Dusseldorf S -Bahn line 11 of the S -Bahn Rhein-Sieg and also the goods station of the city. It lies on the western electrified remaining part of the railway line between Cologne - Mülheim- Lindlar. The station falls under the category 6

The station has a total of seven motorable tracks, one with the platform and the upper line for the S -Bahn, the other tracks used exclusively for freight. The station entrance is a historic mechanical interlocking, which has been in operation since 1911. Adjacent to the S- platform, there is a bus station with 14 bus platforms, which is served by 20 bus lines during the day and six night bus lines.

History

The station was opened along with the route Cologne - Mülheim- Bergisch Gladbach in 1868. In 1870, the line was built further from the entrance of the Bergisch Gladbach Bensberg station after. So we had trains to Bensberg in Bergisch Gladbach station head make. Due to the increased size of the station was opened in 1890 the signal box at the station entrance in an island between the route to Cologne -Mülheim, the route to Bensberg and the railroad crossing Tannenbergstraße.

In 1912, a connecting curve in front of the terminal station was built in Bergisch Gladbach. In addition, a second station in Gronau district was southwest of the old head station built as a pure passenger station, now a through station. People now trains ran from Mülheim directly via the new connection curve to the new station and continue towards Bensberg. The head station in the city center, where several sidings existed in surrounding factories was operated from now on only by freight trains.

After the opening of the new, converted the terminus station, now Bergisch Gladbach city center in 1950 passenger trains were running again on today's train station, which now had a new reception building. For this reason, the connecting curve was no longer used, and finally dismantled in the early 1960s.

The head station was thus until 1912, and since September 1965, the only passenger station in Bergisch Gladbach. Until 1965, passenger trains stopped at both stations; Bergisch Gladbach city center (old and current head station ) to the new and Bergisch Gladbach ( Gronau ) south of the wye. The passenger rail service between Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg was posted on September 29, 1965, thus also the running time of the southern railway station in Gronau ended.

When setting up the S -Bahn Rhein-Sieg the distance between Cologne -Mülheim and Bergisch Gladbach was electrified in the years 1974/75. In Bergisch Gladbach station itself, however, the electrification was limited to the S -Bahn used platform track and another siding at the end of the platform. Following closure of the railway siding, the catenary was removed there again, so that the platform track is the only electrified track of the station today.

Towards the end of 2011 various unneeded tracks were dismantled along with turnout in the northern part of the freight yard and the station entrance. The land lie fallow since then.

Freight traffic

Of the former numerous sidings near the station of the railway siding of the paper mill is M -real Zanders used in the industrial area Gohrsmühle today only. Since December 20, 2012, at here have become irregular trains from Selbstentladewagen with coal for the mill power plant. The delivery of cellulose with trains directly into plant has since been completely stopped, just like the weekly operation of the container terminal of the BGE logistics center in the industrial park zinc smelter on the route from Bergisch Gladbach station towards Bensberg, which last only a railway track of the station mountain. Gladbach was. Reason for the strong reduction of freight transport are only small quantities of goods of the single user, the paper mill M-Real Zanders, for which now transport by truck is more favorable.

The freight trains to Bergisch Gladbach have since been driven exclusively by DB Schenker Rail Germany; until the end of 2012 drove in particular the ports and freight Köln ( HGK ) the trains. Since neither the Bergisch Gladbach freight station are (including Ausziehgleis ) was the harbor Cologne -Niehl electrified, freight trains to Bergisch Gladbach are always covered with a diesel, so the existing overhead line can not be used. For this purpose, DB Schenker is usually a shunting locomotives of the series 290.

Earlier also there were sidings into the industrial area west ( west of the station ) and in the work of Isover, which directly borders the north of the station and once even had its own little train yard. Both sidings are mined mostly today, the track to the Isover terrain ends since 2012 directly behind the fence at a buffer stop.

Modifications and Plans

First, the level crossing Tannenbergstraße to be in the station entrance replaced by three road tunnels. Since only is a platform track for the S - Bahn services available and also the entire S- Bahn line to Bergisch Gladbach area is single track, the current schedule in 20 -minute intervals is the highest possible. In order to provide the required in the rush hour 10 -minute intervals, it would be necessary, at least at the Bergisch Gladbach station to build another platform and to electrify a second track. The ideal case would be to expand the route to the station Köln- Dellbrueck where the two-track section starts today and ends, including the holding point Duckterath twofold. The subgrade is including bridges and overpasses already designed for a second track, however, is in Bergisch Gladbach, according to plans, the second platform track to be built on the territory of the new bus station. The S- Bahn route is in the center of Cologne already at capacity, so here expansion measures were also necessary. So far, however, these conversions failed due to financing. For the construction of the second track, the mechanical interlocking should be soft Tannenbergstraße and be replaced by a remotely controlled from Duisburg, electronic interlocking according to the original plans. In the meantime, the switchboard was entered by order of the State Ministry of Construction, Housing, Urban Development and Transport NRW under No. 172 in the list of monuments in Bergisch Gladbach. The other plans are open again.

As part of the agreed at the meeting of representatives of the federal government, the State of North Rhine -Westphalia and the German Railway on 31 March 2010 two-pronged expansion of the section of Cologne Dellbrueck - Bergisch Gladbach is also planned to extend the railway station Bergisch Gladbach until 2019.
