Berig

Berig was a legendary king of the Goths, according to the tradition of Jordanes. He is not historically attested.

After their traditional tribal legend in Jordanes ( Origo gentis ) the Goths came from an island called Scandza. King Berig allegedly led them on three ships, on the slowest were the Gepids, after Gothiscandza. There they defeated According to the Origo the Rugians and vandals. They settled then allegedly for five generations in Gothiscandza until then under the legendary king Filimer southeast attracted to the Black Sea.

The origin of the Goths from southern Scandinavia is no archaeological evidence; in modern research it is also considered unlikely and considered the report of Jordanes as a topical origin saga. The presence in present-day Poland in the 1st and 2nd centuries, however, is confirmed by several ancient historians. Also found at Gródek at the bow a Gothic cemetery. Some distance away was found in addition the skeleton of a woman who was buried in a ritual vessel. This fact suggests a connection to Scandinavia. Around the year 175 the migration of the Goths began to southeast, after they had already moved over generations still further south, to search for better settlement areas.
