Berkeley County (South Carolina)
Berkeley County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Moncks Corner.
Geography
The County is located in the southeast of South Carolina, is about 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 3181 square kilometers, of which 338 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Georgetown County, Williamsburg County, Charleston County, Dorchester County, Orangeburg County and Clarendon County.
History
Berkeley County was formed in 1682. It was named after John and William Berkeley, co-owner of the province of Carolina.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Berkeley County 142 651 people in 49,922 households and 37,691 families. The population density was 50 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 68.00 percent White, 26.63 percent Black or African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 1.87 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.20 percent from other races groups; 1.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 49,922 households, 39.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 14.2 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 19.4 percent of all households and 5.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
28.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 11.7 percent between 18 to 24, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 7.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 39,908, and the median income for a family was $ 44,242. Males have a median income of $ 31,583, women $ 22,420. The per capita income was $ 16,879. 9.7 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
