Berlin Biennale

The Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art is an organized since 1998 in the two -to three- yearly intervals exhibition of international contemporary art. It takes place at different locations in Berlin. After this exposure had been established, the board of trustees chose a theme such as "When things cast no shadow " ( 5 BB).

Chronology of Exhibitions

The first exhibition was curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Hans -Ulrich Obrist and Nancy Spector. It took place in August in Berlin- Mitte in the KW Institute for Contemporary Art.

The 2nd Berlin Biennale took place from April 20 to June 20, 2001, showing works by 49 artists from 31 countries. Curator Saskia Bos was, venues were rooms of the KW Institute for Modern Art and the Postfuhramt Oranienburger Straße.

The 3rd Berlin Biennale was held from 14 February to 18 April 2004; artistic director was Ute Meta Bauer. Were again used premises of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Martin- Gropius-Bau, as well as for the 35 cinematic works the Kino Arsenal.

The 4th Berlin Biennial from March 25 to June 5, 2006 curated by Maurizio Cattelan, Massimiliano Gioni and Ali Subotnick, showed, among other works of art by Mircea Cantor, Bruce Nauman, Ján Mančuška and Thomas Schütte. From the organizers own gallery ( Gagosian Gallery) was opened in the August street, the first works were already presented six months before the start of the Biennale. For the actual exhibition of eleven different places, including the Old Garrison Cemetery, the Hall of Mirrors at Ballhaus Mitte already served.

The 5th Berlin Biennale, curated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic and was conducted from 5 April to 15 June 2008 and at four different locations including the New National Gallery at the Cultural Forum in Berlin -Mitte.

The 6th Berlin Biennale was held from 11th June until 8 August 2010 and was curated by Kathrin Rhomberg. As a foretaste of this biennial in January 2010 launched the funded by the European Commission project Artists Beyond, which has set itself the goal of artistic work as a creative process to present in public events. Seven artists were involved in Amsterdam, Istanbul, Pristina, Copenhagen, Vienna, Paris and Berlin Artists Beyond.

The 7th Berlin Biennale was held in 2012 from April 27 to July 1st and curated by Artur Zmijewski. Associated curators were Voina and Joanna Warsza. The organizers created during the preparatory period its own newspaper, the P / Act for Art: Berlin Biennale Zeitung.

The 8th Berlin Biennale will take place from August 3, 2014 on May 29. As curator of the Colombian- Canadian artist and art historian Juan A. Gaitán is employed. He previously worked among other things as a curator at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam ( January 2009-December 2011 ) as well as an associate professor of the program for Curatorial Practice at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco ( September 2011-June 2012 ). Juan A. Gaitán has invited as key members and consultants to work together in his artistic team Tarek Atoui, Natasha Ginwala, Catalina Lozano Mariana Munguia, Olaf Nicolai and Danh Vo.
