Berlin City Chess Championship

In the 19th century, there was no city championships in Berlin in chess. The importance of unofficial city championship had at this time, however, the most heavily occupied tournaments of the Berlin Chess Club, of Berlin's leading chess club. The first tournament of the Chess Club took place in 1853, the Jean Dufresne won after a playoff against Max Lange. In the summer of 1902 Ossip Bernstein won the first championship of the General Chess Federation to Berlin, the predecessor of the Berlin Chess Federation before Moritz Lewitt and Piotrowski.

Only since 1904 official city championships were held. The first such tournament won Horatio Caro before Ossip Bernstein, Rudolf Spielmann and William Cohn. As a result of the division of Berlin, there were 1953-1990 separate city championships in East and West Berlin. Since reunification, Berlin as a whole championships are held back.
