Bermuda Race

The Bermuda Race or also known as Newport - Bermuda Race, is an ocean race from Brenton Reef in Newport (Rhode Iceland ) to Hamilton on the island of Bermuda Hamilton Iceland.

The 647 -nautical mile race has been held since 1906 every two years in mid-June. Participants sail most of the time without sight of land. They cross the Gulf Stream and the need for the route usually between three and six days. The first race in 1906 was won by the yawl Tamerlane (11 m) skippered by Frank Maier in a time of 126 hours. The current record of 54 hours was set up by the yacht Pyewacket in 2002.

Closely associated with the Newport - Bermuda Race is the race series Onion Patch. This race series completes the offshore race from the Bermuda Islands.

The Onion Patch regatta series consists of three parts:

  • The annual regatta of the New York Yacht Club on the Atlantic Ocean off Newport a weekend before the Newport - Bermuda Race
  • The Newport - Bermuda Race itself
  • Two races in Great Bay ( Great Sound ) ahead of Hamilton (Bermuda) on Wednesday after the Newport - Bermuda Race

The first Onion Patch in 1964 organized, originally a race similar to the Admiral 's Cup with Team yachts. A team consists of three yachts, representing a sailing club. Today there is both a single and a team ranking.
