Temporary station of 1858

On November 15, 1858, the so-called Red Bridge was completed over the Aare, and the trains could move into the Bern railway station. Since the station building was still under construction, the travelers were provisionally released in the goods shed.

Station from 1860

The built next to the Church of Holy Spirit in the Christoffel tower terminus with the four-track concourse was commissioned by the Swiss Central Railway headed by its chief architect and engineer Wilhelm Ludwig Maring Pressel. Construction has begun on February 12, 1858 on May 1, 1860, the station was inaugurated.

1864 Christoffel tower was demolished to make way for the station square. Remains of the tower were uncovered during the construction of the station early 1970s and incorporated into the Christoffel underpass.

Station from 1891

In 1864 came the first reconstruction proposals, when it became known that the State Railways Bernese wanted to build a connection to Biel. The Swiss Central Railway developed in 1870 a project for a through station on the northwest side of the burger hospital. After various proposals and commissions established, the proposal prevailed. For the construction of a part of the big ski jump had to be removed.

In 1897, the station building was completely destroyed by fire, but was later rebuilt in the same style.

On the night of 10 July 1902, burned again. The fire department was able to bring the fire under control after one and a half hours, most severely damaged were the lodgings of the buffet staff.

In 1930 the old terminal station has been reduced by 30 meters.

Station from 1974

Since 1914, discussions about the reconstruction and location of the station had flared up again. 1956 was decided in a vote to build a new railway station at the old location. In 1957 started the construction under the direction of the later SBB Director General Roger Desponds, 1974, the new station, a partially clad in glass reinforced concrete structures typical of the 1960s and early 1970s style, was inaugurated. The station was cut off for pedestrians by motorized traffic from the city center, the railway station place for pedestrians not to walk on.

In a project study, the Bernese architectural firm called Atelier 5 in 1989 a redesign of the station with a new main entrance to a largely traffic-free station square with level pedestrian connections to downtown. In subsequent years, parts of the study were implemented in a modified form and by other architects.

Accident in 1982

On September 29, 1982, the engine driver a fast train Olten- Geneva tried out down a delay. At the exit of the station he ran 120 instead of 40 km / h over a set of points in distracting position. The derailment called 15 injured. Because of overhead wire The track commonly used, would have been permitted on the speed of 140 km / h was not usable.

Presence

As of 1999, 5 additional modifications could be implemented by the studio. The facade of the reception building was replaced by a contemporary facade was completed in 2003, which should give a more appropriate appearance of the station.

Was created a shopping center, whose business evening opening times longer than those who are open to the rest of the city and over the weekend, as the legal shop opening times of the municipalities do not apply to the properties of the SBB.

The design of the large railway station followed a design concept that emphasizes the function of the station as a transportation hub, must withdraw behind that of shopping. Colors, advertising signs, window frames and labeling are based on the corporate design of the SBB.
