Bernard Darwin

Bernard Richard Meirion Darwin CBE JP ( * September 7, 1876, † 18 October 1961 in Cambridge ) was a British lawyer, sports journalist and writer.

Life

Darwin was the son of Francis Darwin (1848-1925) and his wife Amy jerk ( † September 11, 1876 ). After his mother died four days after birth from puerperal fever, he grew up with his grandparents. His grandfather was the famous naturalist Charles Darwin ( 1809-1882 ).

Darwin got his education at Eton College and studied at the University of Cambridge. At Cambridge he played golf, where he spent three years in a row (1895-1897) won the University Sporting Blue Award and last year was even captain. Besides his activities as a lawyer, he wrote sports articles in The Times and in Country Life. Bernard Darwin wrote several books on the sport of golf, as well as cricket. In 1934 he was captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Bernard Darwin was posthumously elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.

Marriage and descendants

In 1906 married Bernard Darwin in London, the Irish artist Elinor Mary Monsell ( 1871-1954 ). From this marriage two children were born:

  • Ursula Frances (1908-2010)
  • Robert Vere (1910-1974)
