Bernard G. Caulfield

Bernard Gregory Caulfield ( born October 18, 1828 in Alexandria, Virginia; † December 19, 1887 in Deadwood, Dakota Territory ) was an American politician. Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Bernard Caulfield received a good education. He studied until 1848 at Georgetown College in Washington DC After a subsequent law studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his 1850 was admitted to the bar he began in Lexington (Kentucky) to work in this profession. In 1853 he moved to Chicago and his law firm. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career.

After the death of Rep. John Blake Rice Caulfield was chosen due to the election for the first seat of Illinois as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he took up his new mandate on 1 February 1875. Since he was elected in 1874 also for the next legislative session, he could remain until March 3, 1877 Congress. Since March 4, 1875, he was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Department of Justice. In 1876 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Caulfield again practiced as a lawyer. In 1878 he moved to Deadwood in present-day South Dakota. In his new Hemat he worked as a lawyer. He also acquired large estates. He died on 19 December 1887 in Deadwood and was buried in St. Louis.
