Bernard Giluk Dompok

Yang Berhormat Tan Sri Bernard Dompok Giluk, PSM, SPDK, PGDK, JP (born 7 October 1949 in Penampang, British North Borneo ) is a Malaysian politician and was the 11th Prime Minister of the State of Sabah. He was followed in 1998 Yong Teck Lee after and was replaced by Osu Sukam 1999. Dompok is chairman of the party United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation ( UPKO ), which is part of the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional party. He was from 2009 to 2013 Minister of plantations and extractive industries in the Malaysian Cabinet.

Life

Dompok was born on 7 October 1949 in Penampang in what was then British North Borneo, where he attended first the elementary school SM St. Michael; later he went to Kota Kinabalu at the La Salle Secondary School. His Bachelor of Science in FISM he obtained in 1978 at the West Ham Technical Institute, now the University of East London.

He is married to Puan Sri Diana Alip Dompok, with whom he had five children. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with golf and reading.

Professional life

His career began in 1978 as a valuer in Sabah Lands & Surveys Department. But he went public administration then first back on and worked for five years, from 1980 to 1985, as an independent appraiser. He was also active in various organizations, including as a member of the National Finance Committee. He was also a member of the Association of International Parliamentarian Against Genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, former chairman of the Jaycees Penampang and former President of the Sabah Native Economy & Development Institute ( Institute Kemajuan Ekonomi Anak Negeri Sabah ).

Political career

His entry into a political career began in 1986 with the participation in the statewide elections in which he entered for the constituency Moyog in the Legislative Assembly of Sabah and for the electoral district of Penampang to the Malaysian Parliament. He was appointed Minister of Finance of Sabah, a post he held until 1990.

In 1990, he successfully defended his two mandates and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Sabah. In the government of Sabah he kept beside 1990 to 1993 the post of Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and from 1993 to 1994 the Minister of Finance held.

Since 1994 Dompuk is chairman of the party United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation ( UPKO ). In the same year became Minister in the Prime Minister 's Department of Prime Minister Mahathir, but only remained there until 1995.

From 1995 to 1998 he was Minister of Tourism and Environment in the State Government of Sabah.

By then applied rotation principle Dompok took over in 1998, the Office of the Prime Minister of Sabah Yong Teck Lee. In 1999 he had to vacate his seat for Osu Sukam.

Dompok decided at the 11th general election in 1999, no longer for the electoral district of Penampang, but for the electoral district Kinabalu to compete. Again he moved into the Malaysian Parliament.

At the 12th general election in 2004 he was a candidate for the parliamentary seat in the electoral district of Ranau, which he won with a margin of 1387 votes. He received a total of 7547 votes over his rival Ruhimin Adzim @ Ruhimin Ajim ( 6160 votes, independent candidate ), Karim Adam ( 3310 votes, independent candidate ) and Japairil Suhaimin (1609, Independent candidate). In the subsequent elections in 2008, he joined again for the electoral district of his hometown of Penampang and went out again for the Barisan Nasional coalition government in parliament.

From 1999 to 2009 he was Minister in the Prime Minister 's Department of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

From 10 April 2009 to the end of its term in 2013 he was Minister of plantation industries and commodities (Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities ) in the Malaysian government.

Awards

1995 Dompok the first degree of the Illustrious Order of Kinabalu was granted. The first degree is the Great Knight's Cross ( Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Kinabalu ). Dompok was thus the salutation Datuk Seri Panglima to and the abbreviation SPDK behind its name. 1997 Panglima Setia Mahkota the Order, he was awarded, which is associated with the right to the salutation Tan Sri. Dompok is also an appointed magistrate of Sabah ( Justice of Peace, JP abbreviation in the name).

Controversies

In June 2008, Dompok presented publicly against the construction of the 500 kilometer-long Sabah - Sarawak gas pipeline. Instead, it favored the use of natural gas in Sabah and the realization of industrial production of urea and projects to plastics as an alternative. Prime Minister Abdullah had said earlier on 31 May 2008 that the pipeline plans should be abandoned in favor of a gas turbine power plant, however, was caved in after intervention by Petronas and favored the realization of both projects. In October 2008, Dompok announced that he would possibly leave with his party UPKO Barisan Nasional coalition government, if the pipeline project will not be put on ice; However, he qualified this announcement a short time later.
