Bernard Kangro

Bernard Kangro ( born September 18, 1910 at the village of Oe, today Antsla community, district Võru, Estonia, † March 25, 1994 in Lund, Sweden ) was an Estonian writer and poet.

Training

Bernard Kangro was born the son of the farmer Andres Kangro and his wife Minna. He grew up in fairly modest circumstances. Bernard Kangro first attended from 1919 to 1922 the primary school in Kiltre, then the school in Antsla ( 1922-1924 ), and finally from 1924 to 1929 the high school in Valga. From 1929 to 1938 he studied at the University of Tartu Estonian language and literature.

Writer

1935 Bernard Kangro debuted with the poetry collection Sonetid. Other volumes of poetry followed. From 1938 Kangro was a member of the artist group Arbujad ( German about: shaman ), who sought to gain a deeper emotional and spiritual experience of the language. In addition Kangro worked as a journalist, including at Eesti Sõna (1942 ) and Puhkus yes elurõõm ( 1943). 1943/44, he worked as a dramaturge at the theater Vanemuine in Tartu. In 1941, he also worked as an assistant and from 1942 to 1944 as a lecturer in literature at the University of Tartu.

Prior to the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1944 he had to flee into exile in Sweden. There was Bernard Kangro one of the most outstanding Estonian exile writers and publicists. First, he was employed as an archivist in Karlstad, then from 1947 as a research associate at the University of Lund. From 1950 until his death he was editor and publisher of the Estonian cultural magazine Tulimuld and from 1951 director of the ( exile ) Estonian writer publishing Eesti Kirjanike Kooperatiiv AB.

By Bernard Kangro are numerous novels and books of poetry. Central themes are the country life in southern Estonia and Tartu. In his poetry, he uses a creative, often symbolic language. The mood usually alternates between irony, joy but also resignation. The group Arbujad he dedicated the literary work Arbujad (1981) and Arbujate kaasaeg (1983).
